This calculator accounts for overlapping job periods to ensure accurate results.

When a job application asks for your total years of experience, most people either guess, round up, or spend ten minutes doing mental arithmetic across a career that spans multiple roles, some of which overlapped. None of those approaches give you a number you can state with confidence. The Work Experience Calculator removes all of that uncertainty. Add each job from your history with its title, start date, and end date, mark any roles you are still in as current, and the calculator adds it all up — accounting for any periods where jobs overlapped — and returns your total professional experience in years, months, and days in real time as you build your job list.

How to Use the Work Experience Calculator

Building your complete work history takes just a few steps per job:

Add a Job: Enter the job title in the text field — something like Software Developer, Marketing Manager, or any role name that helps you identify the entry. Then pick the start date using the date picker. If the role has ended, select the end date. If you are still working in the role, check the I Currently Work Here box and the calculator uses today’s date as the ongoing end point, updating dynamically as time passes.

Click Add Job: Once the details for a job are filled in, click Add Job to save it to your list. The entry appears in your job history panel and the total experience figure at the top updates immediately to reflect the new addition.

Add More Jobs: Repeat the process for every role in your career history — previous employers, freelance periods, part-time roles, or any other professional experience you want included in the total. There is no limit to the number of entries you can add.

Review Your Job History: All saved entries appear in the job history panel where you can review them at a glance. If an entry was added incorrectly, click the trash icon next to it to remove it and the total recalculates immediately to reflect the deletion.

Read Your Total Experience: The running total at the top of the results section displays your cumulative professional experience in years, months, and days — updating live with every addition or removal so the figure is always current.

Save as PDF: Use your browser’s print function and select Save as PDF to capture your complete job list and total experience figure as a clean single-page document — useful for keeping a personal record or attaching to a career planning document.

Why Use the Work Experience Calculator Online?

Handles Overlapping Job Periods Accurately: Many professionals have held two roles simultaneously — a full-time position alongside a part-time or freelance one, for example. Simply adding up the duration of each job separately would double-count the overlapping period and inflate the total. This calculator identifies and accounts for overlaps in your job history, ensuring the final figure reflects genuine elapsed time in the workforce rather than an artificially inflated sum.

Live Recalculation as You Build Your History: The total updates the moment you add or remove a job, which means you do not have to wait until all entries are complete to see a meaningful figure. You can watch how each role contributes to your total as you go, which also makes it easy to spot if something looks off — an unexpectedly large or small jump after adding a particular entry is a clear signal to double-check the dates.

Current Role Support with Automatic Date Tracking: Marking a role as current means the calculator uses today’s date as the end point and keeps updating as time passes. If you come back to the tool weeks or months later, the total will reflect the additional time that has elapsed in your current role without any manual adjustment needed.

Useful Across Multiple Career Situations: Job seekers calculating experience to quote on an application, professionals preparing for interviews where total years in the industry matters, people updating a CV after a long tenure in one role, or anyone simply curious about how much of their life has been spent working — all of these use cases are served by the same simple multi-entry interface.

More Reliable Than Mental Arithmetic: Date arithmetic across a multi-decade career involving roles of varying lengths and occasional overlaps is genuinely difficult to do accurately in your head. Delegating it to a calculator that handles the months, the day counts, and the overlap detection automatically is not just more convenient — it produces a defensible, accurate figure that you can state with confidence rather than a rough estimate you are not entirely sure about.
