GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a consumption tax applied in many countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and numerous others. When prices are quoted as GST-inclusive totals, the tax component is already embedded in the figure shown — meaning the number you see on a receipt, invoice, or price tag is a blend of the original base price and the GST on top of it. For everyday purchases this is convenient, but for anyone who needs to separate the two components — for accounting, invoicing, expense claims, tax returns, or margin analysis — simply knowing the final total is not enough. You need the base price and the GST amount independently.

The instinctive approach most people try is to subtract the GST percentage directly from the inclusive total. This is mathematically incorrect and consistently produces the wrong answer. The reason is that GST is calculated on the original pre-tax price, not on the GST-inclusive total. So if you take a percentage of the final inclusive figure, you are applying that rate to the wrong base.

The correct method is the reverse GST formula:

Original Price (Pre-GST) = GST-Inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + GST Rate)

And the GST component is:

GST Amount = GST-Inclusive Amount − Original Price

To illustrate: if an invoice shows a total of $118 and the applicable GST rate is 18%, the correct original price is $118 ÷ 1.18 = $100.00, and the GST amount embedded in that total is $18.00. If you instead took 18% of $118 directly, you would arrive at $21.24 — which is wrong. The error grows larger at higher GST rates and compounds significantly when applied across multiple transactions or line items.

The Reverse GST Calculator applies this formula correctly and instantly. You enter the GST-inclusive amount and select the applicable GST rate — the four preset options of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% cover the most commonly used GST slabs across various jurisdictions. If your applicable rate falls outside these presets, the custom rate field accepts any decimal value, making the tool flexible enough to handle any GST regime globally. The calculator immediately displays the original pre-GST price, the GST amount embedded in the total, and the final GST-inclusive price as a confirmation that all three figures reconcile correctly. A copy-to-clipboard button lets you transfer results directly into a spreadsheet, accounting software, or invoice without retyping.

To use it, enter the GST-inclusive amount, click the applicable rate button or type a custom rate, and results appear instantly. No additional button press is required.

Businesses use it when reconciling purchase invoices where only the total is shown and the tax breakdown needs to be reconstructed for input tax credit claims or expense reporting. Freelancers and service providers use it when they receive a lump-sum GST-inclusive payment and need to determine the taxable value of the underlying service. Retailers use it to strip the GST component out of competitor pricing and compare base prices directly. Accountants use it during period-end closings to correctly split GST amounts across ledger entries. And individuals use it when they want to understand exactly how much of what they paid was tax versus the actual cost of the product or service.
